Day Five - Thursday, April 19th - North Shore of Oahu

After our hike, we drove along the North Shore, taking in many of the sites of the triple crown of surfing (though April isn't exactly surf season).

In Haleiwa we had no choice but to stop at Matsumoto's for Shave Ice. Hawaiian Shave ice is infinitely better than any ol' sno cone. The difference seems to be in both the quality of the shave (much more like fine snow than hunks of ice) and that they keep the syrups cool, so the ice doesn't chunk up when you pour the syrup on. Another difference was that you could get the shave ice with ice cream on the bottom, though we didn't try it. A large shave ice was $1.75 -- pretty much the only thing we found in Hawaii that was cheaper than you'd find at home. Also, places like Motoumoto's and Ioke's (nextdoor, which was also excellent) also focus on their colorings. Flavors arecolored differently resulting in beautiful rainbow combinations.

The combination photographed is called "Motsumoto's" -- it makes a beautiful rainbow.

After our refreshing snack, we headed back towards the hotel, to the beach nearest Pipeline. The waves were too high for us to get in the water, so we sat on the beach. In the last two photos, you can see Matt walking back to where I was sitting.

While Becky rested, Matt took photos of surfers. The surf was breaking very close to shore, so it wasn't ideal (and the waves weren't as high as they'd be earlier in the year), but it was still pretty amazing to see these skilled surfers.

Matt liked this can.

On Thursday evening we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center. We went only for their evening show. Before the show, Matt posed by one of the Easter Island guys.
