Maui Photo Album - October 2008
Monday - South Maui
Having spent a large part of Sunday in the car touring the island, Monday seemed like a good day for just lying on the beach. Many of Maui's best beaches are on the south west side, near the "town" of Kihei. I say "town" because I'm not sure it really is one - just seems like mile after mile of hotels and beaches. A little touristy, yes, but the beaches are great.
We started at Big Beach (aka Oleloa Beach). And, yes, it lived up to the name. Nice waves rolling onto a very wide beach with deep soft sand. We played in the water and just lay on the sand for a few hours. For an adventure, we climbed over ROCK FORMATION to the beach just north of here. Turns out, it's called Little Beach (how creative!). We didn't stay there long, since, uh, well, it apparently is used for nude sunbathing. Uh, not today... thanks...
We visited another beach before lunch - our guidebook called it Secret Cove. It was a great place to watch the waves crashing. It also gave a long-distance view to Big Beach.
Secret Cove / Big Beach
Big Beach is the stretch of sand in the photo above. The left side of the photo shows the volcanic rock formation we climbed over for a quick peak at Little Beach.
I'm not totally sure what island that is on the horizon - probably Lanai (Kaho'olawe was closer in the other direction).
Waves breaking on volcanic rocks.
Matt, climbing on the rocks and watching the waves crash.
These local kids jumped off the rocks a bit. After they realized we were taking their pictures, they stopped - so we stopped taking pictures as to not ruin their fun.
The sea was angry that day, my friends. :)
Kihei Beaches - Kama'ole Beach
We thoroughly enjoyed Big Beach and Secret Cove, but hunger called us into Kihei. After a lovely pita for lunch, we wiled away the afternoon on yet more great beaches - Kama'ole I, II, & III.
Kama'ole Beach is a very accessible stretch of beach in the heart of Kihei. Great views across the sea to Molokai, Kaho'olawe, etc. The sand on all of these beaches, by the way, is super soft and really hot!
Matt in the water.
Becky, apparently not expecting that wave just then...
Becky in the waves.
Becky - behind me you can see the tip of Maui.
Looking towards the West Maui Mountain.
Isn't that a postcard? It's just our stuff, sitting on the beach, but oh so pretty!!
Matt, enjoying the waves.
Becky, enjoying the beach. Turns out I really enjoy just sitting on the edge of the ocean, having the waves crash over my legs. So relaxing...
I just like this picture. :)
And, that's me again. Look at the shiny water behind me!
It's hard to tell, but there are two guys doing stand-up padding in this photo. The little island behind them is Molokini; the larger is Kaho'olawe.
Sunset at Black Rock
We considered other plans, but wound up back at the Sheraton for Sunset at Black Rock. Here's Matt, enjoying the last warm rays of sun.
